This guide was pricey but indispensable on my "bucket list" trip to Argentina. It helped us identify every bird we saw and photographed. The bilingual feature was helpful when seeking help from guides and locals. I also liked that each species was depicted by both photo and drawing. The size and shape of the guide is such that it will fit into an oversized pocket. The included CD can be downloaded onto an Ipod for field reference, and we were able to ID several birds by sound that we never saw.Product details

I carried it with me throughout Argentina and used it often. Good for a concise guide covering a large area.
A very complete and beautifully illustrated field guide to the birds of Argentina and Uruguay. It features a range map, good description of the bird and a photo and illustration of the birds. The package also included a bird checklist and dvd of bird songs for many of the bird. This is a must book for anyone going to bird in Argentina or Uruguay.
The book's drawings are a great disappointment. They are dark and not well executed. One might say haphazardly executed. There are however in addition to the drawings also photographs of each bird. I however prefer drawings. I ordered the book based on the other reviews, regrettably. I also have "Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica" The drawings in that book are somewhat tiny it being an illustrated checklist, but they are all much better executed. This book does have a nice bonus that is included--a DVD of the bird calls. Might order the book just to get the DVD. Also the map is on the same page with the description of the bird whereas with the other book I mentioned the map is in the back. The book is bi-lingual in Spanish and English. It also includes a separate checklist also in Spanish and English. Perhaps I am being too critical but in my opinion the drawings make this book a 2nd choice.
A little pricey for a bird guide but it seems to cover all 1000 birds in two languages. It has photos, drawings with habitat background, maps where found, and good short descriptions. Also a I-VI rating on the probability of seeing the bird. The back cover says "contains DVD with 900 bird sounds". The book actually contains a CD of sounds which plays on a computer.
The drawings are quite poor, but having the photos (even if they are also of sometimes low quality) is a real help--I wish more guides would do that. The range maps appeared to be very accurate (which is quite different from earlier editions/the southern SA & Antarctica guide), and the text was also good. The best part was the CD which came with the guide, and included usually very good recordings from all species in Argentina.
